Chapter 1 - The Glass Castle in Sonoma

The Sonoma vineyard was a masterpiece of curated luxury. Sunlight spilled through the floor-to-ceiling glass, casting warm golden hues across white floral arrangements and crystal chandeliers. Downstairs, laughter and clanking champagne flutes echoed softly off polished teak floors. To anyone looking from the outside, the Hayes empire was celebrating its finest hour: the union of Nathan Hayes, the brilliant tech prodigy, and Audrey Vance, a poised beauty with a pedigree as spotless as her lace gown.
Margaret Hayes smoothed the emerald silk of her dress, her heart full as she ascended the spiral staircase to check on her future daughter-in-law. She expected to find tears of joy, last-minute veil adjustments, or nervous giggles. Instead, as she reached the secluded upper hallway and pushed open the suite door, the breath left her lungs in a brutal, violent gasp.
Inside the sunlit bedroom, Audrey stood in her full white glory, her veil pushed back. But she was not alone. Wrapped around her waist was a man twice her age—a man with silver-tempered hair, wearing a custom navy tuxedo. He was kissing her with a fierce, possessive intensity that made Margaret's blood run ice-cold.
It was Robert. Her husband of thirty-two years. The father of her son.
The heavy oak door creaked, breaking the spell. Robert snapped his head toward the door, his face instantly draining of color. Audrey froze, her hand still resting intimately on Robert's lapel. For two agonizing seconds, silence hung like an executioner's blade. Neither man nor girl spoke. Robert's mouth opened, forming a silent 'Margaret,' but she didn't wait to hear the toxic excuses.
Margaret turned on her heel and fled down the corridor, her high heels clicking loudly against the wood. Her chest burned with fury and grief, tears threatening to burst from her eyes, but shock kept them back. She took the stairs two at a time, her mind racing. The entire world below was celebrating a lie. A sick, twisted farce engineered by the two people her family trusted most.
At the foot of the stairs, standing near the grand arched entrance, was her son. Nathan looked breathtakingly handsome in his midnight-blue suit, his shoulders broad, his expression as calm and unreadable as the Pacific Ocean. He was holding a glass of sparkling water, casually conversing with a winery investor.
Margaret lunged forward, grabbing his forearm with desperate strength. 'Nathan,' she whispered, her voice trembling with raw horror. 'Your father... he’s upstairs with Audrey. They're... oh God, Nathan, stop this now!'
She braced herself for the impact—for the sudden shattering of his soul, the outrage, the rushing upstairs to tear his father apart. She braced for the nightmare to spill open before two hundred elite guests.
Instead, Nathan didn't flinch. His neck turned slowly, and those dark, penetrating eyes focused on his mother. There was no terror in his gaze. No heart-broken sob. No tremor in his hands.
He leaned down slightly and whispered four words that made Margaret's entire world tilt on its axis: 'I know, Mom. I know.'

Margaret stared, her fingers slackening on his arm. 'You... you know?' she stuttered, stunned. 'If you know, then call the security! Cancel the ceremony! You can't let her walk down that aisle!'
A subtle, cold curve touched the corner of Nathan's lips—a smile so razor-thin and dangerous it sent a shiver down Margaret's spine. 'Not yet,' he said softly, looking over her shoulder toward the staircase where Robert was now appearing, frantically smoothing his tie. 'I have my own plan, Mom. Stand by me, look happy, and watch. By tonight, you'll understand why.'
