Chapter 20 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Spring arrived in California, bringing warm ocean breezes and bright blooming flora. The dark storm that had engulfed the Hayes family had finally passed, leaving behind a clean slate.
Margaret stood in the grand lobby of Hayes Capital's newly renovated headquarters. The old, dark wood paneling had been completely replaced with warm oak, glass partitions, and vibrant living walls of green plants. The company had been fully restructured into a ethical venture fund, focusing on green energy and youth entrepreneurship.
Margaret was no longer just the former wife of a disgraced tycoon. She was the Chairman of the Board, highly respected across the financial district for her sharp mind, dignity, and decisive leadership during the crisis.
Nathan walked into her corner office holding two cups of artisanal coffee. 'How does it feel to run the most talked-about clean-tech fund in San Francisco, Madam Chair?'
Margaret laughed, taking a cup from him. 'It feels exhausting, wonderful, and terrifying all at once, Nathan.'
She walked to the window, looking out over the Bay Bridge. 'I received a letter from Robert’s attorney yesterday. He’s being transferred to a federal facility in Oregon. He asked if I would visit him.'
Nathan paused, looking at his mother. 'What did you say?'
'I said no,' Margaret replied softly, her voice firm and free of bitterness. 'I spent thirty years living in his shadow, Nathan. For forgiving him, I need time. But for living my own life, I don't need his permission anymore. I've moved on.'
Nathan smiled, reaching over to touch her shoulder. 'I'm proud of you, Mom.'
'And what about you?' Margaret asked, looking at her son with warm concern. 'Apex Dynamics' stock is at an all-time high. You saved your company, you destroyed your enemies... but when are you going to start living again?'
Nathan looked down at his coffee, a soft shadow passing over his face. 'I'm taking a few weeks off, Mom. Sophia and I are heading to Europe to oversee our new AI research hub in Zurich.'
Margaret raised an eyebrow with a subtle, knowing smile. 'Sophia, hmm?'
May you like
'She’s a brilliant legal partner,' Nathan said quickly, though a slight flush touched his cheeks.
'Of course she is,' Margaret chuckled. 'Just make sure you take time to look up from your computer screens once in a while.'
