Chapter 3 - The Vows of Deceit

The garden was a sea of pastel silks, tailored linen suits, and high-society smiles. Over two hundred of California's most influential figures—venture capitalists, tech moguls, state politicians—sat beneath the pergola of blooming white wisteria. At the front stood Nathan, a picture of aristocratic poise, flanked by his groomsmen. Beside him stood Robert, playing the role of proud father, though a fine sheen of sweat glittered at his temples under the midday sun.
The string quartet transitioned into the traditional bridal march. The crowd rose in unison, heads turning toward the far end of the aisle.
Audrey appeared. She was breath-taking, framed by the lush greenery of the vineyard. Her silk crepe gown clung to her tall figure, and her long lace veil trailed elegantly behind her. She held a bouquet of white peonies, her face a mask of blushing innocence. As she glided down the aisle, her eyes met Nathan's with an expression of adoring devotion that made Margaret, seated in the front row, feel physically ill.
How could anyone fake that look? Margaret thought, her chest tight. How could a woman look at a man with such tender passion when, fifteen minutes earlier, she had been tangled in his father's arms?
Audrey reached the alter. Her father handed her hand to Nathan. Nathan took her fingers gently—not too tight, not too cold. He smiled down at her.
'You look stunning, Audrey,' Nathan whispered softly. His voice was audible to the minister and the close family.
'I'm the luckiest girl in the world, Nathan,' Audrey replied, her voice quivering with fake emotion. 'I can't wait to be your wife.'
Behind them, Robert cleared his throat softly, shifting his weight. Margaret watched her husband from her seat, noticing how his eyes darted nervously between Audrey's bare shoulders and Nathan's calm face. Robert was terrified of getting caught, yet exhilarated by the thrill. The pure arrogance of the man was astounding.
The minister began the service. 'Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the sight of God and these witnesses to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony...'
Every word felt like an insult to the institution of marriage. Margaret gripped her handbag, her mind reeling. Nathan had said *crime scene*. What did he mean? Was this about money? Was Audrey trying to steal his tech company, Apex Dynamics? Or was Robert trying to siphon funds through Audrey?
'Do you, Nathan James Hayes, take Audrey Vance to be your lawful wedded wife...'
The garden fell dead silent. Everyone waited for the classic 'I do.' Margaret held her breath, her heart beating like a trapped bird in her ribs. Was Nathan really going to say it?
Nathan looked straight into Audrey's big, beautiful brown eyes. He paused just long enough to let a ripple of tension filter through the front row. Audrey's smile flickered for a fraction of a second, a shadow of uncertainty crossing her face.

Then, Nathan spoke. His voice carried clearly across the quiet garden, ringing with unwavering clarity.
'I do.'
