Chapter 23 - Shadows in Zurich

While the revelation in Geneva brought clarity, the dark shadows of the past were not quite ready to let go.
As Nathan and Sophia returned to their hotel in Zurich late that evening, Maya called with an urgent update from San Francisco.
'Nathan, we have a problem,' Maya said, her voice tight with alarm over the encrypted satellite line. 'An unknown buyer just acquired fifteen percent of Apex Dynamics' floating European debt through a rogue broker in Frankfurt.'
Nathan stopped in the hotel lobby, his grip tightening on his phone. 'I thought we locked down all public debt tranches during the short squeeze?'
'We did in North America,' Maya explained. 'But Charles Vance had a silent partner in Europe—a Swiss private equity group called Aethelgard Holdings. They are using a loophole in European corporate law to demand an immediate audit of Apex's international AI patents!'
Sophia looked at Nathan's tense expression. 'What is it?'
'Charles had a backup plan,' Nathan said, his mind calculating options at lightning speed. 'He planted a legal kill-switch in our European patent filings. If Aethelgard forces an audit, our European operations will be frozen for months, halting our global expansion.'
Sophia’s eyes flashed with fierce legal intellect. 'Aethelgard Holdings? I know that firm. My mother’s estate owned a minority share in their parent trust before she died. If I exercise my inheritance rights under Swiss probate law, I can block their audit request instantly.'

Nathan looked at her, a faint smile breaking through his serious expression. 'You can do that?'
Sophia smiled back, a dangerous, confident spark in her eyes. 'I'm a Vance litigator, Nathan. Blocking arrogant billionaires is my specialty.'
