The Sonoma Betrayal - Full Story

The autumn rain fell heavily over the Sonoma vineyard estate. The white tents and wedding flower arrangements had long been cleared away, leaving the sweeping grounds looking grey, somber, and empty.

Margaret stood on the glass balcony of the main house, holding a warm mug of coffee. She had returned to the estate to oversee the final inventory division before putting the property up for sale. She wanted every trace of her old life gone.

Suddenly, the lights inside the house flickered and died. The hum of the generator failed to kick in.

Margaret turned around, frowning. 'Hello? Is anyone down there?'

Silence answered her, save for the patter of rain against the glass ceiling.

She put her coffee down and stepped into the living room. As she reached the top of the stairs, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the hallway below.

It was Robert. He was soaked from the rain, his clothes disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot. In his right hand, he held a small black handgun.

Margaret froze, her blood running cold. 'Robert... what are you doing here?'

'You destroyed me, Margaret!' Robert yelled, his voice cracking as he stumbled up the stairs toward her. 'You and Nathan! You took my company! You took my life! You threw me to the wolves!'

'You threw yourself to the wolves, Robert!' Margaret said, trying to keep her voice steady while stepping backward. 'Put the gun down. You're out of your mind!'

'I need ten million dollars!' Robert screamed, his hands shaking violently as he pointed the gun at her chest. 'Call Nathan! Call him right now and tell him to transfer ten million dollars to an offshore account, or I swear to God, Margaret, I'll end this right here!'

Before Margaret could answer, the front double doors of the mansion burst open with a loud bang.
