Chapter 28 - Redemption’s Reflection

Six months later, spring had returned once again.
On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, Nathan made a private trip to the Oregon Federal Correctional Institution. He had not seen his father in eighteen months.
The visiting room was small, simple, and clean. Robert Hayes walked in, dressed in a grey uniform. The once arrogant billionaire had lost weight, his hair was now completely silver, and his posture was humble, worn down by the quiet reality of prison life.
He sat across from Nathan, looking at his son with an expression of deep, painful reverence.
'Nathan,' Robert said, his voice quiet. 'I... I didn't think you would ever come.'
'I came because Mom asked me to check on you,' Nathan said, his tone measured, calm, and free of malice.
Robert bowed his head, tears welling in his eyes. 'How is she?'
'She’s thriving, Dad,' Nathan answered truthfully. 'She runs Hayes Capital. She built a research center in honor of Evelyn Vance. She is happy.'
Robert wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, nodding slowly. 'Good. She deserves to be happy. I treated her terribly. I treated you terribly.'
Robert looked up at Nathan, his hands clasped on the table. 'I don't expect your forgiveness, Nathan. I know what I did was unpardonable. I let greed and pride ruin my soul. But I want you to know... I watch the news here. Every time I see Apex on TV, every time I see your face... I am so proud of the man you are. You were better than me in every way.'
Nathan looked at his father—no longer a dangerous enemy, just a broken man facing the consequences of his choices.
'I don't hate you anymore, Dad,' Nathan said quietly. 'The anger is gone. Focus on completing your sentence and finding peace with yourself.'

As Nathan stood up to leave, Robert whispered, 'Thank you, son.'
Nathan walked out into the crisp Oregon air, feeling the final lingering weight of the past lift completely off his heart.
