Chapter 2 - Playing the Perfect Groom

The shock hung over Margaret like heavy oxygen, making every breath feel suffocating. She stood beside Nathan near the foot of the mahogany staircase, watching her husband descend. Robert Hayes acted with the slick, practiced composure of a billionaire executive who had spent forty years charming boardrooms and dodging scandals. He checked his cufflinks, offered a tight, jovial nod to a hedge-fund manager in the foyer, and swept his gaze across the crowd until it landed on his wife and son.

When Robert reached them, his eyes darted nervously toward Margaret. He searched her face for a sign of total collapse, but Margaret, forced by the absolute calm radiating off Nathan, held her composure behind a mask of marble ice.

'Nathan, my boy,' Robert said, his voice dropping into a warm, paternal tone that made Margaret's stomach churn. He clapped a hand on Nathan's shoulder. 'Everything looking good? The guests are moving into the garden. We should take our places.'

'Everything is proceeding exactly according to schedule, Dad,' Nathan replied. His voice was smooth as silk, completely devoid of heat or hostility. 'In fact, I don't think today could possibly be more memorable.'

Robert blinked, taken aback by the eerie stillness in his son's tone, but quickly recovered with a deep laugh. 'That's the spirit! Audrey is just putting on her veil. She's... a bit nervous, naturally. Big day.'

'Naturally,' Nathan repeated, his dark eyes locking onto his father's with an intensity that caused Robert to break eye contact first. 'A woman entering a new chapter of her life should feel every bit of the gravity.'

Margaret squeezed her clutch until her knuckles turned ghostly white. She wanted to scream. She wanted to slap the slick smirk off her husband's face and tear the designer veil off the deceitful girl upstairs. But Nathan's hand slid down to grasp her elbow with firm, reassuring pressure. His thumb rubbed her sleeve in a silent code: *Trust me.*

Why was Nathan doing this? What kind of twisted game was he playing? For six months, Audrey Vance had wormed her way into their family—a bright, thirty-year-old financial analyst who had swept Nathan off his feet following his tech startup's public valuation. Or so everyone thought. Now Margaret realized the sheer depth of the poison in her home. Was Audrey sleeping with Robert for money? Was Robert financing her? Or was it something even more sinister?

The organ music began to swell from the glass conservatory garden outside. String quartet melodies floated through the open French doors, signaling the commencement of the processional.

'Time for us to step out,' Robert said, clearing his throat and offering Margaret his arm with a practiced charm. 'Shall we, my dear?'

Margaret looked at the arm offered by the man she had loved for three decades—the man who had just been kissing her son's bride in an upstairs bedroom. She felt nauseous. She couldn't touch him. Before she could react, Nathan stepped between them smoothly.

'Dad, why don't you head out first and escort the minister?' Nathan suggested gently. 'Mom needs a moment with me before I walk down. A mother-son moment.'

Robert hesitated, feeling the strange, heavy tension in the air, but nodded. 'Of course. Don't keep the crowd waiting.' He turned and walked out toward the sunny aisle.

As soon as Robert was out of earshot, Margaret turned fiercely to Nathan. 'Nathan, I cannot sit in the front row and watch you marry that viper! It's sick! It's a humiliation!'

Nathan leaned down, his voice dropping to a whisper that cut through the music like steel. 'Mom, if we stop it now, they walk away with everything. They think they're playing me. But Audrey isn't the only one who signed a prenuptial agreement, and Dad isn't the only one who holds access to the corporate trusts. If I explode now, it's just a family scandal. If I let them walk down that aisle, it becomes a crime scene. Trust me for twenty minutes.'
