Chapter 18 - Standoff in Sonoma

The air inside the grand foyer was thick with tension. Outside, thunder rumbled across the rolling Sonoma hills, illuminating the high-ceilinged room with sudden flashes of blue light.
Robert spun around slightly, keeping the weapon trained between Margaret on the landing above and Nathan standing at the entrance below.
'Nathan! Don't come any closer!' Robert shrieked, his finger tightening on the trigger. 'You think you're so smart! You played me like a puppet! Well, who's in control now, huh?! Who holds the power now?!'
Nathan didn't panic. He took a slow, deliberate step forward, his hands held open at his chest, palms facing out.
'You don't hold any power, Dad,' Nathan said softly, his voice echoing in the dark room. 'You're holding a weapon because you're terrified. You're terrified of prison, terrified of Kozlov, and terrified of looking at what you've become.'
Robert blinked, shock flashing across his face. 'How... how do you know about Kozlov?'
'I know everything you do, Dad. I've been three steps ahead of you since the day you touched Audrey,' Nathan replied calmly, taking another step closer to the stairs. 'Kozlov's men aren't coming for you. Federal agents arrested his entire syndicate at SFO airport thirty minutes ago. You don't owe anyone money anymore.'
Robert's hand shook even harder. Tears of confusion and rage spilled down his hollow cheeks. 'You're lying! You're tricking me again!'
'Look at yourself, Robert,' Margaret said softly from the top of the stairs, her voice filled with a painful mixture of grief and pity. 'You had a family that loved you. You had a company we built together. You traded all of it for a girl young enough to be your daughter and a handful of dirty money. Was it worth it?'
The words hit Robert like physical blows. He looked at his wife—the woman who had stood by him for thirty years. He looked at his son—the brilliant young man he had tried to ruin out of envy and greed.
The heavy metal gun suddenly felt impossibly heavy in his hand.

'I... I lost everything...' Robert sobbed, his shoulders collapsing as his arm sank down. 'I lost everything...'
Nathan moved in swiftly, grabbing the gun's barrel and twisting it safely out of Robert's limp fingers. Seconds later, flashlights illuminated the foyer as police officers rushed in through the open door, taking the weeping man to the ground.
