Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Toast

The applause erupted like thunder across the estate gardens. Guests cheered, champagne glasses were raised, and rose petals were tossed into the air as Nathan and Audrey walked back down the aisle arm in arm. Audrey was practically glowing, radiating the triumph of a woman who had successfully executed a masterstroke. She leaned her head against Nathan’s shoulder as they walked, whispering promises of forever.

The reception was held inside the grand ballroom of the winery estate. Golden ambient lighting illuminated tables set with silver cutlery and fine crystal. An eight-piece jazz band played softly in the background as waiters glided through the crowd with trays of vintage Pinot Noir.

Margaret sat at the main head table, feeling like a ghost at her own life's feast. Across the table, Robert was downing his third glass of scotch, his eyes constantly tracking Audrey as she mingled with executives from Apex Dynamics.

Nathan remained the perfect, attentive groom. He draped a arm around Audrey's waist, accepted congratulations from venture capitalists, and smiled for photos. But Margaret, who had raised him, saw the cold, calculated predator hiding behind his pleasant mask.

At eight o'clock, the master of ceremonies tapped his microphone. 'Ladies and gentlemen, quiet down please! It is time for the toasts! First up, we have the father of the groom, Mr. Robert Hayes!'

The room clapped enthusiastically. Robert stood up, smoothing his jacket, a grand, charismatic smile spreading across his face. He picked up his champagne glass and walked to the center of the dance floor, tapping his glass with a silver spoon.

'Friends, family, esteemed business partners,' Robert began, his voice booming with warmth. 'Thirty years ago, when I founded Hayes Capital, I thought I had achieved my life's greatest purpose. But watching my son Nathan grow into the man he is today—and now, watching him marry this exquisite, brilliant woman, Audrey—I know what real success looks like.'

He turned to Audrey, offering her a look of deep, lingering reverence that made several observant guests tilt their heads in faint curiosity. 'Audrey, you bring light into Nathan's life. And into this family. We welcome you with open arms.'

Audrey blew him a delicate kiss from the head table. 'Thank you, Robert,' she said sweetly.

Robert raised his glass. 'To Nathan and Audrey! May your union be as unbreakable as steel!'

'To Nathan and Audrey!' the crowd echoed, drinking.

Then, Nathan stood up. He didn't wait for the MC to introduce him. He walked slowly to the center of the floor, taking the microphone from his father's hand. His presence was commanding, effortlessly shifting the energy in the room.

'Thank you, Dad,' Nathan said, his voice echoing smoothly through the high-ceilinged room. 'That was a truly moving speech. Unbreakable as steel... those are strong words.'

Nathan looked around the room, taking in every face—the board members, the high-society friends, his mother, his father, and his new wife.

'You know,' Nathan continued, a faint smile playing on his lips, 'weddings are supposed to be about truth, transparency, and eternal trust. So before we cut the cake, I think it's only fitting that we share a little video presentation I put together. A celebration of how we all got here today.'
