Chapter 26 - The Healing of Margaret

While Nathan found closure through action, Margaret found her healing through restoration.
On a bright afternoon in July, Margaret held the grand opening of the *Evelyn Vance Memorial Center for Women in Technology* in downtown San Francisco. Funded entirely by Hayes Capital's profits, the center was dedicated to providing scholarships, incubation grants, and legal support for female tech entrepreneurs.
Hundreds of guests, including top Silicon Valley executives, female founders, and community leaders, gathered in the bright glass atrium.
Margaret stood at the podium, looking radiant in a emerald green dress—the same color she had worn on that fateful day in Sonoma, but now worn as a symbol of rebirth and strength.
'For a long time,' Margaret spoke into the microphone, her voice echoing clearly through the applause, 'I believed that trust was a liability. I thought that when the people you love betray you, the only safe response is to build walls around your heart.'
She looked toward the front row, where Nathan and Sophia sat together, smiling up at her.
'But I learned from my son that truth is not something to hide from. Truth is the foundation upon which we rebuild. This center is named in honor of a brilliant woman whose legacy was stolen by greedy men. Today, we give that legacy back to every young woman who dares to dream.'
The room erupted into a standing ovation. Tears glittered in Margaret's eyes as she stepped down from the stage into the warm embraces of her friends and family.
Later that evening, as the crowd dispersed, Margaret walked through the art gallery section of the center. She stopped in front of a restored archival portrait of Evelyn Vance, Robert, and Charles from 1992.
Nathan walked up beside her, placing a gentle arm around her shoulders.

'It's beautiful, Mom,' Nathan said softly.
'It is,' Margaret agreed quietly. 'The past can't hurt us anymore, Nathan. We finally won.'
