Chapter 21 - Secrets of the Geneva Vault

Two weeks later, Geneva, Switzerland.

A thick fog hung over Lake Geneva as Nathan and Sophia Vance stepped out of an armored sedan in front of the private banking institution *Banque de Pury & Cie*.

While the public trial in California was finished, Sophia had uncovered one final anomaly while auditing her father’s remaining personal assets: a safety deposit box registered in Geneva under a joint trust code that required both her signature and Nathan's digital biometric key.

They were led down into the subterranean vault area by a grey-haired Swiss banker wearing white linen gloves. The banker unlocked the heavy steel safe door and pulled out a long, brass-bound metal box, placing it on a velvet table before bowing and leaving the room.

Sophia looked at Nathan. 'Are you ready for whatever Charles left behind?'

Nathan pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner on the lockbox. The green light chimed, and the heavy brass latch clicked open.

Inside the box lay three items: a thick leather ledger, a physical paper certificate for five percent of Apex Dynamics' founding stock, and an old black-and-white photograph.

Nathan picked up the photograph. It showed three young college students standing outside a Stanford engineering lab thirty years ago, laughing with their arms around each other's shoulders.

The three people in the photo were Robert Hayes, Charles Vance... and a young woman with smiling eyes who looked strikingly similar to Margaret.

Sophia gasped softly. 'Is that... my mother?'

Nathan turned the photo over. Written on the back in fading black ink was a note dated May 14, 1992:

May you like

*'To Charles and Robert — Whatever happens with the patent, our promise stands. The empire belongs to our children.'*

Nathan stared at the handwriting, a sudden wave of realization crashing over him. 'This wasn't just a corporate rivalry that started four months ago... This war was planned thirty years ago.'
