Chapter 24 - The Legal Gambit

The high-stakes emergency hearing was held on the top floor of the Zurich Financial Arbitration Center.
Across the long mahogany conference table sat the legal team for Aethelgard Holdings—six high-priced Swiss attorneys led by a ruthless senior partner named Hans Richter. Richter looked smug, expecting an easy surrender from the young American tech CEO.
'Mr. Hayes,' Richter said, tapping his gold pen against a leather folder. 'Under Article 44 of the European Patent Code, my clients hold sufficient debt leverage to freeze your European server nodes until a full intellectual property audit is completed. This process will take eighteen months. Unless, of course, Apex agrees to settle for a forty percent IP licensing share.'
Nathan didn't say a word. He simply gestured to Sophia, who was sitting beside him wearing a tailored charcoal suit.
Sophia slid a thick, blue-bound legal dossier across the table.
'Mr. Richter,' Sophia began, her voice smooth and cutting as diamond. 'Before you invoke Article 44, I suggest you review page seven of the Swiss Probate Registry records for Aethelgard Holdings.'
Richter frowned, picking up the dossier and flipping to the page. As his eyes scanned the official notary seals, his smug expression shattered.
'As the sole living heir of Evelyn Vance,' Sophia continued coldly, 'I hold a fifty-one percent controlling vote in Aethelgard’s parent trust. Ten minutes ago, I executed a formal proxy vote dissolving Aethelgard's board of directors and revoking your authority to represent this firm.'
Richter’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. 'This... this is irregular! You can't dissolve the board during an active arbitration!'
'I just did,' Sophia replied, leaning forward with a terrifyingly calm smile. 'And if you don't withdraw your fraudulent patent claim within five minutes, I will file criminal charges against your firm for conspiracy to commit market manipulation in Swiss federal court.'
Richter looked at his colleagues, who were franticly packing up their laptops. Without another word, Richter closed his folder, stood up, and hurried out of the room with his entire legal team in shame.

Nathan turned to Sophia, genuinely dazzled. 'Remind me never to get on your bad side.'
Sophia laughed, a warm, beautiful sound that echoed through the room. 'Just keep paying my legal retainers, Hayes.'
