Chapter 10 - Bloodline and Deception

The central boardroom of Vance Enterprises sat on the forty-fifth floor of the glass-and-steel skyscraper overlooking downtown. It was 8:00 AM on Wednesday morning. Outside, the morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a cold brilliant glow across the city skyline.
Inside the boardroom, Richard Sterling—CFO of Vance Enterprises and Daniel’s long-time family friend—sat at the head of the polished glass table, sipping dark coffee while reviewing quarterly balance sheets. Richard was fifty-eight, impeccably groomed in a tailor-made Italian suit, his hair silvered at the temples. He had been Daniel’s father's most trusted advisor for over three decades.
The double doors of the boardroom swung open forcefully.
Daniel walked in, accompanied by Agent Maya Miller and two federal officers in plain clothes.
Richard looked up, a warm, concerned smile spreading across his face. He set his coffee cup down and stood up. "Daniel! My goodness, son, I heard about the awful incident with Noah yesterday! How is the boy doing? I tried calling your mobile all night, but—"
"Save it, Richard," Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping into a harsh, icy tone as he tossed a thick folder onto the boardroom table.
Richard’s smile faltered slightly. He looked down at the documents inside the folder—bank records, wire logs, and forensic audit reports detailing millions of dollars siphoned into dummy offshore corporations over four consecutive years.
"What is the meaning of this, Daniel?" Richard asked smoothly, maintaining his calm, aristocratic posture. "If this is about the accounting discrepancies in the expansion budget, I told you months ago that our external auditors were handling—"
"The money was routed through your private terminal, Richard," Maya stated stepping forward, her badge visible on her belt. "Federal search warrants were executed at your private residence two hours ago. We recovered six offshore hard wallets containing twenty-two million dollars in stolen corporate funds."
Richard’s eyes narrowed. He slowly sat back down in his leather chair, steepling his fingers together. The friendly old family friend vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating strategist.
"You always were too sentimental for this business, Daniel," Richard said softly, a dark sneer touching his lips. "Just like your father. He built this empire on sweat and blood, but he lacked the vision to take it global. I built this company's shadow revenue."
"You murdered Eleanor," Daniel said, his voice shaking with pure hatred. "She trusted you like an uncle."
"Eleanor was nosy," Richard replied coldly, without a single shred of remorse. "She started asking questions about offshore vendor accounts that didn't concern her. She came to this very office, threatening to take her findings to the Board of Directors and the SEC."
"So you sent Victor Vance to kill her," Daniel said.
"Victor is a blunt instrument," Richard admitted, waving his hand dismissively. "He made it look like an accident, which worked brilliantly... until your sweet little wife Lauren began getting greedy. She wanted a bigger piece of the pie. She demanded ten million dollars to keep quiet after she discovered Victor's presence on the estate footage."
"And when Noah saw Victor yesterday, Lauren tried to kill him to protect herself," Daniel said, his fist slamming onto the table. "My six-year-old son, Richard!"
Richard shrugged casually. "Collateral damage. In high-stakes finance, Daniel, minor sacrifices are made to preserve the larger entity. You should have stayed blinded by your grief. You would have lived a very comfortable life as a minority shareholder while I took the firm public."
Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling out steel handcuffs. "Richard Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and obstruction of justice."
Richard looked at the handcuffs, then looked up at Daniel with a chilling smirk. "You think you've won, Daniel? You think taking me down fixes everything?"
Richard leaned forward, his eyes burning with toxic delight. "Ask your girl agent over there about the secondary ledger. Ask her who owned the offshore holding company that bought up sixty percent of your firm's debt last Friday."
Daniel froze, turning his gaze toward Maya. "Maya... what is he talking about?"
May you like
Maya’s jaw tightened. She hesitated for a fraction of a second, her eyes dropping slightly.
"Tell him, Agent Miller," Richard chuckled darkly. "Tell him who really owns the Crow Syndicate."
