Chapter 7 - The Alibi That Crumbled

The storm outside St. Jude's had settled into a steady, dreary drizzle by the time Federal tactical units secured the fourth floor.
Inside a private conference room on the hospital's administrative level, Daniel sat across from Maya—or rather, Agent Maya Miller—and her senior supervisor, Director Marcus Thorne, a gray-haired veteran with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor.
"Two years ago, Eleanor Vance came to us," Director Thorne began, sliding a thick, classified file folder across the polished table toward Daniel. "She had discovered massive accounting discrepancies inside Vance Enterprises' international development division. Over forty million dollars had been siphoned off into off-shore accounts in the Cayman Islands over a three-year period."
Daniel opened the folder, his eyes scanning the bank statements and wire transfer logs. His signature was at the bottom of every authorization document.
"This... this is impossible," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling. "I never signed these transfers! I oversee all major capital expenditures personally!"
"They were forged," Maya explained gently. "And the person forging them had direct access to your private digital signature key. Eleanor realized this a month before her death. She didn't know who inside the company was doing it, so she reached out to federal authorities quietly to avoid tipping off the suspect."
"Lauren..." Daniel breathed, the horrifying realization crashing down on him like a tidal wave. "Lauren was Eleanor's personal administrative assistant before we got married. She managed Eleanor's schedule... and she had full access to my home study."
"Exactly," Thorne nodded. "Lauren wasn't just your assistant's replacement, Daniel. She was planted in your life by the Crow Syndicate. Their goal was simple: execute a slow, systematic takeover of Vance Enterprises by bankrupting your assets and framing you for federal fraud, while using Lauren to gain legal control of your estate."
Daniel put his head in his hands, sickening guilt washing over him. "My God... Eleanor died because she found out. And I... I brought her killer into my home. I let her live under the same roof as my son!"
"Don't blame yourself, Mr. Vance," Maya said softly. "Lauren is a master manipulator. She spent years building a bulletproof persona. But tonight, she made a critical error. She panicked when Noah remembered the man with the scar."
"Who is he?" Daniel asked, looking up with dark determination. "The man in the missing security frames."
"His name is Victor Vance," Thorne revealed, dropping a photo onto the table. "No relation to you, despite the surname. He's a senior enforcer for the Crow Syndicate, specializing in staged accidents and high-value eliminations. He was the one who entered your house the night Eleanor drowned."
"And Lauren gave him forty-seven seconds of blank footage today to hide the fact that he was back in your house to retrieve the original embezzlement ledger Eleanor hid before she died," Maya added.
"Where is Lauren now?" Daniel demanded, his fists balling tightly on the table.
"Our highway patrol units spotted her vehicle heading west toward the abandoned industrial docks near Blackwood River," Thorne stated. "She thinks she's escaping with the master drive. What she doesn't know is that Agent Miller planted a localized GPS tracking beacon inside that drive six months ago."
Daniel stood up immediately. "I'm coming with you."
"Mr. Vance, this is an active federal operation," Thorne cautioned. "It's far too dangerous."
"That woman tried to murder my six-year-old son!" Daniel shouted, his eyes blazing with fury. "She ruined my family, murdered my wife, and tried to steal everything I built! I'm not sitting in a hospital room while you let her slip away!"
Thorne looked at Daniel's resolute expression, then turned to Maya, who gave a subtle nod of agreement.
"Alright," Thorne conceded. "You ride with Agent Miller. But you follow our orders to the letter. Is that clear?"
May you like
"Clear," Daniel gritted out.
Outside, the tactical SUVs were already idling, their dark windows reflecting the flashing red lights of the police escort. The hunt for Lauren Vance had officially begun.
