Chapter 12 - Night of the Uninvited Guest

Two days later, the sun rose brightly over the suburban landscape surrounding St. Jude Children's Hospital. Noah had been moved to a sunlit private room on the top floor, surrounded by his favorite toys, drawing pads, and color pencils. His recovery was progressing remarkably well; the bruises on his arm were fading, and his cheerful smile was finally returning.

Daniel sat beside the bed, watching his son draw a colorful picture of a tall house, three smiling figures, and a bright yellow sun.

"Who are the three people, buddy?" Daniel asked gently, running his fingers through Noah's soft hair.

Noah pointed his crayon at the paper. "That's you, Daddy. That's me. And that's Maya."

Daniel smiled softly, a genuine warmth touching his heart for the first time in years. "Maya has been very good to us, hasn't she?"

"She saved me, Daddy," Noah said simply, looking up with big, clear brown eyes. "When the bad woman pushed me, Maya caught me. And she stopped the man with the scar."

The door opened softly, and Maya walked in, wearing civilian clothes—a simple navy blazer and jeans. She was carrying a box of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

"Hey there, champion," Maya greeted Noah with a bright smile. "The doctor says if you finish your lunch today, you might get discharged tomorrow morning!"

"Yay!" Noah cheered, waving his crayon in the air.

Daniel stood up, stepping toward the window with Maya while Noah happily resumed his drawing.

"How are things at the precinct?" Daniel asked in a low tone.

"Lauren’s formal arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon," Maya reported. "Her lawyers tried to request bail, but given the severity of the charges—attempted murder of a minor and capital murder conspiracy—the judge denied bail flatly. She's being held at the County Detention Center."

"And Victor Vance?" Daniel asked, his eyes darkening slightly. "Did the river patrol find his body?"

Maya hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Search and rescue teams dragged the river for two miles down stream. They found his coat tangled in a barge winch yesterday... but no body."

Daniel's posture went rigid. "So he could still be alive?"

"It's extremely unlikely anyone could survive a thirty-foot fall into those rapids with a shattered shoulder blade," Maya explained reassuringly. "The police dive unit believes his body was carried out into the deep bay waters. But just to be safe, federal marshals will maintain round-the-clock protection at your residence."

That night, at 11:30 PM, Vance Manor was quiet. The heavy rain had stopped, replaced by a thick, misty fog rolling across the vast manicured lawns.

Arthur walked his hourly patrol around the perimeter of the mansion, checking the smart motion sensors along the heavy iron fences. Everything was green on his tactical tablet screen.

Inside the grand master study on the second floor, Daniel sat at his desk, reading through Eleanor's handwritten journal. Her familiar, elegant handwriting filled his heart with both sweet memories and sharp sorrow.

On page 42, Eleanor had written:

*"If anything happens to me, Daniel, please look inside the small grandfather clock in the old tea room. I hid the master thumb drive inside the pendulum housing. It contains the raw unedited audio of Richard Sterling threatening me."*

Daniel gasped. The original audio recording of Richard's threat! That was the absolute bulletproof piece of evidence needed to seal the prosecution's case forever!

Daniel stood up immediately, taking his flashlight, and walked down the silent dark hallway toward the estate's old east wing.

He opened the heavy wooden door of the old tea room. The room smelled of lavender and old silk, untouched since Eleanor's death. In the corner stood the ornate mahogany grandfather clock.

Daniel walked up to the clock, unlatching the glass front door, and reached inside the heavy brass pendulum. His fingers brushed against a small, metallic object taped to the inner wood casing.

Suddenly, a cold metal cylinder pressed firmly against the back of his neck.

"Looking for this, Vance?" a raspy, terrible voice whispered from the dark shadows behind him.
