Chapter 2 - Forty-Seven Missing Seconds

The emergency medical team arrived within twelve minutes, carefully stabilizing Noah before lifting him onto a gurney. Daniel insisted on staying by his son's side as paramedics rolled him toward the waiting ambulance, but his mind was spinning in a chaotic vortex of suspicion and horrific doubt.

"Take him to St. Jude Children's Hospital," Daniel ordered his head security coordinator, Arthur, a burly former detective who had served the Vance family for over fifteen years. "I want full security outside Noah's room. Nobody goes in or out except authorized doctors."

"Understood, Mr. Vance," Arthur replied gravely. "And what about the house?"

Daniel turned his eyes back toward the grand mansion. His wife, Lauren, was standing near the doorway, holding a glass of iced water with trembling hands, surrounded by two worried housekeepers. "Isolate the security server room. I want to see the staircase footage from 2:15 PM to 2:25 PM immediately."

Ten minutes later, Daniel, Arthur, and a visibly tense Lauren sat inside the mansion's subterranean security monitoring office. Blue light from six large high-definition monitors illuminated their faces. Arthur pulled up the primary security log for the Grand Hallway Upper Deck camera.

"Timestamp starting at 2:14 PM," Arthur stated, clicking the mouse.

On screen, the crisp 4K footage displayed the top of the marble stairs. Noah appeared in frame at 2:16 PM, holding his wooden train, playing quietly near the banister.

Daniel's chest tightened as he leaned closer to the monitor. Lauren sat motionless on the leather chair behind them, her knuckles white as she squeezed her purse strap.

At 2:18:10 PM, Lauren appeared in the video frame, walking slowly toward the boy. The audio pick-up caught her faint greeting: "Noah, darling..."

They watched as Noah turned to face her. On screen, Lauren stopped two feet away from the boy. She leaned forward slightly, her mouth moving.

Then, at precisely 2:18:42 PM, the digital video feed stuttered.

The screen abruptly pixelated, flickering into static gray noise.

"Wait, what was that?" Daniel snapped, stepping forward. "Rewind it! What happened to the feed?!"

Arthur frowned, tapping several keys on the control console. He rewound the video and played it back. Again, at 2:18:42 PM, the clear image shattered into distorted vertical lines. The digital timer on the bottom right corner began skipping wildly: 2:18:42... 2:18:55... 2:19:15... 2:19:29.

At 2:19:29 PM, the video feed suddenly snapped back to crystal-clear high definition.

On screen, Noah was gone from the top of the stairs. Lauren was standing alone at the edge of the landing, looking down into the foyer with her hand over her mouth, her body posture stiff. A second later, the video showed her rushing down the steps toward where Maya was already holding the boy.

"There's a gap," Arthur muttered, his voice dropping into a dangerous baritone. "Exactly forty-seven seconds of raw footage have been completely purged from the local drive and the cloud backup."

"Purged?!" Daniel turned violently toward Arthur. "This system is encrypted with military-grade firewall software! How could forty-seven seconds just disappear?!"

"Someone manually bypassed the buffer array," Arthur explained, pointing his finger at the system's background code logs. "It wasn't an automatic system glitch. Someone with high-level admin access executed a immediate memory override command at 2:18:43 PM."

Daniel felt a chill travel down his spine. He turned slowly around to face his wife. "Lauren... only three people have admin access to this system. Me, Arthur, and you."

Lauren gasped, dropping her purse onto the floor as she rose to her feet, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Daniel! Are you insinuating that I deleted the video?! Why would I even know how to override a security server?! You set up the passwords!"

"You had the master security app on your phone," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm, though his eyes burned with pure rage. "You've had access to the master panel since the day we got married."

"I don't even know how to use the app beyond locking the front gate!" Lauren cried out, stepping closer to catch Daniel's hands. "Someone must have hacked us! Or maybe Maya... maybe Maya bribed someone! She wanted to frame me so you wouldn't fire her for being reckless!"

"Maya doesn't even have a computer in her quarters, Lauren," Daniel barked, pulling his hands away from her grip.

Arthur suddenly gasped, leaning closer to frame 2:18:41 PM—the exact single frame right before the video cut to static. "Wait... look at this reflection on the glass paneling along the hallway wall."

Daniel leaned down, staring at the small reflection visible in the polished glass of a nearby hanging artwork.

In that tiny, distorted reflection, standing near the shadows of the master study door just ten feet behind Lauren, was the silhouette of a tall man wearing a dark trench coat and a grey driver's cap.

Arthur brought up the mansion's perimeter access logs. "Checking gate entry sensors... checking smart door locks... No entry registered for any guest or staff at that time. According to the system, no one was in the house except you, Mrs. Vance, Noah, and Maya."

"Then who the hell is that man?" Daniel demanded, his blood running cold.

Arthur zoomed in on frame 2:18:41 as far as the digital enhancement would allow. The man's face was partially obscured by shadow, but a distinct scar running down his right jawline was clearly visible.

Later that evening, inside the dimly lit pediatric intensive care room at St. Jude's, Noah opened his heavy eyelids. His head was wrapped in white bandages, and his tiny arm rested in a cast.

Daniel sat in the chair beside the bed, softly holding his son's small hand. Maya stood near the window, keeping a quiet, watchful vigil.

"Daddy?" Noah whispered weakly.

"I'm right here, buddy," Daniel said gently, kissing the boy's forehead. "You're safe now. Nobody is going to hurt you ever again. I promise."

Noah looked past his father toward the dark window. His breathing grew shallow, his eyes widening with a sudden, deep-seated terror.

"Daddy..." Noah whispered, his small fingers tightening around Daniel's thumb. "The man in the black coat..."

Daniel's heart stopped. "What man, Noah?"

"The man standing behind Lauren when she pushed me..." Noah whimpered, tears spilling down his pale cheeks. "I've seen him before."

Daniel felt a wave of ice freeze the blood in his veins. "Where, Noah? Where did you see him?"

May you like

Noah looked directly into his father's eyes and uttered five words that shattered Daniel's world into a thousand pieces:

"The night Mom died."
