Chapter 11 - The Blackmail Package

The tension inside the boardroom shattered into an uneasy, suffocating silence.
Daniel stared at Maya, his chest rising and falling heavily. "Maya? What does he mean?"
Maya looked directly into Daniel's eyes, her voice steady despite the weight of the moment. "The holding company that bought Vance Enterprises' distressed debt is called Apex Holdings. It's an offshore shell corporation registered in Panama. We've been tracing its true ownership structure for eighteen months, Mr. Vance."
"And who owns it?!" Daniel demanded.
"It isn't owned by an individual," Maya explained calmly. "It's a collective trust managed by the Board of Directors of your own firm—led by Richard Sterling and three senior equity partners."
Richard’s smirk evaporated. He glared at Maya with sudden rage. "What?!"
"Did you really think the FBI didn't know about the Panama trust, Richard?" Maya asked, pulling a second set of documents from her briefcase. "You thought you were using the Crow Syndicate as your private muscle, but you didn't realize we compromised their financial network three weeks ago. We know about the blackmail packages you created for every member of the Vance Enterprises board."
Richard snapped his mouth shut, his face turning pale.
"For four years," Maya continued, addressing Daniel, "Richard used Victor Vance and Lauren to create manufactured scandals, illegal wiretaps, and financial traps for your board members. He forced them to vote in favor of selling off company assets to Apex Holdings at penniless prices. His ultimate plan was to force Vance Enterprises into bankruptcy next month, buy up the remaining assets through Apex, and take total control of your father's legacy."
"You monster," Daniel whispered, turning to Richard. "You didn't just betray me. You tried to destroy everything my father built."
"Your father was a fool!" Richard spat, dropping his refined act entirely as federal officers stepped forward and grabbed his arms, pulling him from his seat. "He had gold in his hands and treated it like dirt! I built this empire's real wealth!"
"Take him away," Director Thorne ordered from the doorway.
As officers escorted a cursing Richard Sterling out of the boardroom in handcuffs, Daniel leaned heavily against the glass table, taking a deep, shuddering breath. The dizzying web of lies that had suffocated his life for two years was finally unraveling, but the emotional cost was overwhelming.
Maya walked up to his side, handing him a sealed manila envelope.
"What's this?" Daniel asked softly.
"It was recovered from Lauren's safe house early this morning," Maya said. "It's the original personal journal Eleanor kept during her final weeks. She knew she was in danger, Daniel. She wrote everything down—not just financial details, but letters to you and Noah."
Daniel touched the smooth paper of the envelope, his fingers trembling. Tears welled up in his eyes for the first time in months—not tears of hopeless grief, but of profound relief.
"Thank you, Maya," Daniel whispered.
"We still have work to do, Mr. Vance," Maya reminded him gently. "Lauren is in federal custody, but her defense attorneys are already preparing to file motions to suppress the house security footage, claiming it was tampered with."

"They won't succeed," Daniel said, his eyes hardening with newfound resolve. "I'm going to make sure every single person involved in harming my family spends the rest of their natural lives behind bars."
"Then let's go visit your son," Maya smiled softly. "He's been asking for his dad."
