Chapter 17 - The Cold Room at St. Jude's

The following morning, the sun broke over the city in a blaze of brilliant golden light, washing away the last lingering remnants of the week's dark storms.
At St. Jude Children's Hospital, Noah was officially discharged. His arm was still in a lightweight cast, decorated with colorful stickers placed by the friendly nursing staff, but his eyes were bright, filled with joy and excitement to finally leave the hospital.
Daniel carried Noah's small duffel bag while Maya held the boy's hand as they walked out through the main lobby. A modest gathering of reporters and news cameras had assembled outside the hospital gates, having caught wind of the dramatic federal arrests of Richard Sterling and Lauren Vance.
"Mr. Vance! Is it true your wife was involved in a corporate murder conspiracy?!"
"Mr. Vance! Will Vance Enterprises survive the financial audit?!"
"Agent Miller! Can you comment on the Crow Syndicate arrests?!"
Daniel stopped briefly before the array of microphones, holding Noah safely behind him while Maya stood steadfast by his side.
"Two years ago, my family suffered an unspeakable tragedy," Daniel said clearly, his voice echoing with strength and dignified composure across the crowded plaza. "For a long time, lies and corruption filled our lives. But today, thanks to the tireless dedication of Federal Agent Maya Miller and the Justice Department, the truth has been fully exposed. Those who harmed my family and attempted to destroy my company will face the full extent of the law. Vance Enterprises remains strong, honest, and dedicated to our community. Thank you."
Without answering further questions, Daniel, Maya, and Noah stepped into the waiting private vehicle, leaving the flashing cameras behind.
Inside the quiet vehicle, Noah looked out the window at the passing city buildings before looking up at Maya.
"Maya?" Noah asked softly.
"Yes, Noah?" Maya smiled, leaning down toward him.
"Are you still going to be our maid?" the boy asked, his voice tinted with a gentle worry. "Or do you have to go back to being a police agent now?"
Daniel looked over at Maya, waiting for her answer with a hopeful glint in his eyes.
Maya reached out, gently holding Noah's small hand. "Well, Noah... my job as an undercover federal agent on this case is finished. But I promised your father that I would always be around to help keep you safe. So... if your dad doesn't mind, I'd love to stay in your lives—not as a maid, but as a real friend."
Noah’s face lit up with a massive smile. "Yay! Daddy, can Maya stay?!"
Daniel laughed softly, his heart fuller than it had been in years. "Noah, I think having Maya in our lives is the best thing that could ever happen to us."
They arrived back at Vance Manor an hour later. The grand estate, once a cold shadow-filled fortress of secrets, now felt bright, warm, and inviting under the morning sun.
Arthur stood at the front gates, smiling broadly as he opened the heavy mahogany front doors for them. "Welcome home, young master Noah!"
"Arthur!" Noah cheered, running inside the foyer—carefully avoiding the marble stairs, taking the newly installed safety elevator up to his playroom.
Daniel and Maya stood together in the grand foyer, looking up at the sweeping staircase where this terrifying chapter had begun. The dome security camera mounted near the chandelier caught the bright morning light.

"It feels like a completely different house," Daniel remarked softly.
"A house is just stone and glass, Daniel," Maya said gently, looking up at him with warmth. "It's the people inside who make it a home."
