Chapter 13 - A Poisoned Legacy

Daniel’s entire body went rigid. The freezing touch of the gun barrel against his neck sent a sharp jolt of adrenaline coursing through his veins.
In the faint moonlight filtering through the dusty tea room window, Daniel caught the reflection in the grandfather clock's glass door.
Standing behind him was Victor Vance. The scarred enforcer was soaked, pale as a corpse, his right arm bound tightly to his chest with blood-stained bandages. His eyes were hollow, red-rimmed, and filled with a terrifying, unhinged madness.
"You... you survived the river," Daniel said, keeping his voice level as he slowly raised his hands into the air.
"Takes more than a cold bath and a lead slug to kill me, Vance," Victor growled through clenched teeth, leaning closer until Daniel could smell the metallic stench of blood and stagnant river water on him. "I dragged myself out of the mud two miles downstream. The Syndicate abandoned me. Richard's lawyers refused to answer my calls. I have nothing left to lose."
"If you shoot me, Arthur and the federal guards outside will be in this room in ten seconds," Daniel warned calmly.
"Let them come," Victor laughed dryly, a chilling, wet cough rattling his chest. "I'm not leaving this house alive anyway. But before I go to hell, I'm taking you with me—and I'm taking that drive."
Victor reached around Daniel's shoulder, ripping the small metallic thumb drive from Daniel's fingers.
"This tiny piece of metal cost me everything," Victor hissed, staring at the drive. "Four million dollars Richard promised me to make your wife disappear. Four million dollars I never saw!"
"Richard used you, Victor," Daniel said, slowly turning his head slightly to face his captor. "Just like he used Lauren. You were nothing but a disposable thug to him. Hand the drive over to the police, testify against Richard, and you might avoid the death penalty."
"Testify?!" Victor spat, shoving the gun harder into Daniel's ribs. "I don't deal with feds! Now walk toward the desk. You're going to write a signed confession stating that you embezzled the funds yourself and killed Eleanor in a domestic dispute."
"Never," Daniel said flatly.
Victor's face twisted into psychotic rage. He raised the butt of his heavy pistol, intending to slam it against Daniel's temple to render him unconscious.
*FLASH!*
Before Victor's arm could descend, a blinding beam of light hit his eyes from the doorway.
"FBI! DROP THE WEAPON!" Maya’s voice boomed through the room like a localized thunderbolt.
Victor screamed in frustration, spinning around and firing blindly toward the light.
*BANG! BANG!*
Daniel didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, grabbing Victor's injured right arm and twisting it down with all his weight. Victor shrieked in agony as his shattered shoulder blade re-injured violently. The gun dropped to the hardwood floor.
Maya charged forward, slamming her tactical baton across Victor's knees. The towering enforcer collapsed to the floor with a heavy thud, gasping for air as federal agents flooded into the room, pinning him down under six heavy boots.
Arthur rushed into the room, holding his sidearm, his face red with panic. "Mr. Vance! Are you hit?!"
"I'm okay, Arthur!" Daniel panted, leaning against the grandfather clock, gasping for air. "I'm okay!"
Maya bent down, picking up the small metallic thumb drive from the floor. She inspected it, then looked up at Daniel with a look of immense triumph.
"Is this the original audio recording?" Maya asked.
Daniel nodded, a weary but victorious smile spreading across his face. "That's Eleanor's ultimate legacy. The confession that buries Richard Sterling forever."
Victor, pinned to the floor in heavy steel handcuffs, lifted his bloody face, glaring at Daniel with pure malice. "You think it's over, Vance?! You think Richard is the top of the pyramid?! You have no idea who really controls Apex Holdings!"

Daniel walked up to the fallen enforcer, looking down at him with cold, unshakable authority.
"Whoever they are," Daniel said clearly, "they're next."
