Chapter 6 - The Maid's Hidden Truth

The silence in the pitch-black hospital hallway was suffocating. Outside, lightning flashed across the night sky, briefly illuminating the hallway through the frosted glass windows in stark, ghostly white.
Daniel immediately stepped in front of Maya, drawing a concealed firearm from his jacket. "Get back inside Noah's room. Lock the door from the inside."
"Mr. Vance, wait!" Maya whispered urgently, pulling a small tactical flashlight from her apron pocket and switching it on. The narrow beam of light cut through the gloom. "The floor's emergency power controls are in the utility closet near the nurse's station. If the main grid went down, someone manually tripped the localized breaker."
Before Daniel could respond, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the far stairwell door.
"Go!" Daniel shoved Maya gently back toward Room 412.
Inside the room, Maya slammed the door shut and engaged the heavy deadbolt. She rushed to Noah's bedside. The young boy was awake now, his wide, frightened eyes reflecting the pale moonlight streaming through the window.
"Maya? What's happening?" Noah whimpered, sitting up with difficulty. "Why are the lights off?"
"Shh, sweetie, it's okay," Maya whispered calmly, wrapping her arms around him. "Your dad is outside. We are completely safe. I need you to stay very quiet, alright?"
Outside in the hallway, gunshots shattered the quiet night.
*BANG! BANG!*
Daniel fired twice down the darkened corridor as two shadowed figures rushed past the security guards' positions. Sparks erupted from the walls as returning fire zipped through the air. Daniel ducked behind a heavy linen cart, his teeth gritted.
"Vance!" a deep, gravelly voice echoed through the hallway. "Give us the boy and you walk out of here alive! Your wife made a deal, and you're standing in the middle of a war you can't win!"
"You'll have to go through me first!" Daniel shouted back, aiming carefully at the silhouetted figure near the fire exit.
Meanwhile, inside Room 412, the handle of the locked door began to jiggle violently.
*CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.*
Someone was trying to pick the lock from the outside.
Maya’s eyes darted around the room. She knew the lock wouldn't hold long against a professional intruder. She grabbed the heavy steel IV pole and wedged it tightly beneath the door handle, creating a temporary brace.
Then, she pulled out her phone and dialed a private number—not 911, but a direct line to an unlisted encrypted network.
"Code Red at St. Jude's, pediatric fourth floor," Maya said into the phone, her voice dropping into an authoritative, razor-sharp tone that bore no resemblance to a timid housemaid. "Intruders on site. Activate extraction protocol immediately."
A voice answered through the earpiece: "Copy that, Agent Miller. Backup is sixty seconds out."
Noah stared at her from the bed, his small mouth open in shock. "Maya... who are you talking to?"
Maya turned to the boy, a calm, comforting smile returning to her face. "Noah... I promised your mother a long time ago that I would always keep you safe."
"My... my mom?" Noah gasped.
"Your mother, Eleanor, knew she was in danger two years ago," Maya revealed quietly, crouching down beside his bed. "She hired my firm to investigate corporate theft inside Vance Enterprises. When she died, I took the job as your maid to stay close and protect you from the inside."
Before Noah could digest the revelation, the hospital room door slammed violently inward. The steel IV pole snapped under the tremendous pressure.
A tall man stepped into the dark room, holding a silenced pistol. A long, jagged scar ran down his right jawline—the man from the missing security frames.
"End of the line, kid," the scarred man sneered, raising his weapon.
In a split-second flash of movement, Maya dropped her flashlight, lunged forward with unbelievable speed, and executed a lethal martial arts disarm. She grabbed the man's wrist, twisted it upward until his joint popped, and slammed her elbow into his ribs.
The gun clattered to the floor. The scarred man grunted in agony, stumbling back into the hallway right as Daniel burst through the door, his weapon raised.
"Freeze!" Daniel roared.
The scarred man spat blood onto the floor, looking between Daniel and Maya with a hateful glare. "You think you've won? Lauren already has the drive. By morning, Vance Enterprises belongs to the Syndicate!"
With a desperate surge, the scarred man threw a smoke pellet onto the floor and crashed through the nearby emergency exit glass, diving onto the fire escape outside into the torrential rain.
Daniel rushed to the broken window, but the dark figure vanished into the storm below.
Daniel turned around, staring at Maya in complete astonishment. She was standing calmly near Noah's bed, adjusting her apron as if nothing extraordinary had just happened.

"Who... who are you really?" Daniel asked, breathless.
Maya looked up, her blue eyes sharp and steady. "My name is Special Agent Maya Miller, Federal Financial Crimes Task Force. And it's time I told you the truth about your wife Eleanor, Mr. Vance."
