Chapter 16 - Lies Over Champagne

Floor 12 of Vance Enterprises was normally reserved for server hardware maintenance, document archiving, and night-shift IT personnel. At 7:00 PM, the long concrete hallways were dimly lit, echoing with the soft hum of cooling vents and backup electrical transformers.

Maya and Daniel moved cautiously down the corridor, their weapons ready, checking every locked server door along the hallway.

At the far end of the hall, near Server Room 12B, a heavy steel door stood slightly ajar. A faint blue glow flickered against the polished concrete floor.

Maya gave Daniel a quick signal, pointing two fingers toward the door before moving silently into breaching position. She kicked the door open with controlled force.

"FBI! HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!"

Inside the room, sitting behind a high-powered mobile server terminal, was a young man in a corporate IT uniform, his hands frozen over a glowing keyboard.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" the young man shrieked, throwing his hands into the air, trembling violently. "I was just doing what I was paid to do!"

Daniel stepped into the room, recognizing the young man immediately. "Kevin? You're the junior network administrator Richard hired last year!"

"Mr. Vance, please!" Kevin sobbed, dropping to his knees. "Mr. Sterling paid me fifty thousand dollars in cryptocurrency to install a darknet mirror script on the mansion's server! He told me it was just for internal corporate auditing! I didn't know anyone was going to get hurt!"

Maya stepped forward, quickly securing Kevin in handcuffs. "Are you the one trying to wipe the Zurich cache right now?"

"No! I wasn't wiping it!" Kevin cried out frantically. "I was trying to stop the auto-destruct protocol! When Richard got arrested, an automated kill-switch was triggered in Zurich! If the download isn't completed in three minutes, the server will permanently overwrite the data!"

Daniel rushed over to the terminal screen. A digital countdown timer was ticking away:

`02:14... 02:13... 02:12...`

"Julian!" Daniel yelled into his radio headset. "Can you override the auto-destruct protocol from upstairs?!"

Through the radio, Julian's voice came through fast and clear: "I see what Kevin's script is doing! Tell him to enter his local master clearance key into the terminal now!"

Maya grabbed Kevin by the collar, bringing him up to the screen. "Enter the key! Now!"

Kevin’s shaking fingers typed rapidly into the command line: `KEY_OVERRIDE_VANCE_8841`.

The red warning screen vanished, replaced by a bright green progress bar that instantly shot to 100%.

`FILE RECOVERY COMPLETE: FOOTAGE_JULY_27_STAIRCASE.MP4 LOADED.`

A collective sigh of relief washed over the room.

Julian’s voice boomed joyfully through the radio headset: "Got it! The 47 missing seconds are fully recovered, verified, and saved to the federal secure database! We have complete, unbroken visual evidence!"

Daniel looked at the monitor screen as the raw video file opened automatically.

There, on the high-definition display, was the horrifying truth in absolute clarity:

Lauren Vance standing over six-year-old Noah at the top of the marble stairs. The camera captured her clear expression of cold hatred, her hand extending forward, and the precise moment she shoved the defenseless child backward down the stairs.

The video also showed Victor Vance stepping out from the study shadows right after the fall, handing Lauren a high-end mobile device to execute the server wipe command before melting away into the rear exit.

Daniel watched the video with cold, absolute finality. The truth was no longer hidden behind missing frames, darknet servers, or corporate lies. It was laid bare before the world.

"It's over," Daniel said softly, looking at Maya. "It's finally completely over."

Maya smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Now, Mr. Vance... let's go home."
