Chapter 20 - The Trap Is Sprung

As autumn transitioned into winter, Vance Enterprises enjoyed unprecedented growth and public respect. Under Daniel’s ethical leadership and Maya’s rigorous security oversight, the company's stock value reached an all-time high. The firm's new residential development projects focused on eco-friendly, affordable housing initiatives—a dream Eleanor had held dear before her passing.

Inside Vance Manor, the transformation was even deeper. The house was constantly filled with laughter, music, and the delicious aroma of home-cooked meals. Maya’s presence had completely healed the deep emotional wounds left by Lauren’s treachery.

Noah was thriving in school, excelling in his classes and making plenty of new friends. His nightmares of the marble staircase had vanished entirely, replaced by happy memories of weekend camping trips, park outings, and bedtime stories read by Maya and Daniel.

One weekend in early November, Daniel organized a special family trip to the mountains. They rented a cozy timber lodge near Lake Tahoe, surrounded by snow-dusted pine trees and breathtaking alpine views.

Noah spent the afternoon building snowmen with Maya on the wide wooden deck, their joyful laughter echoing across the quiet, frozen forest.

"Daddy, look!" Noah yelled, tossing a small snowball toward Daniel, who was coming out of the cabin carrying a tray of hot apple cider.

Daniel dodged the snowball with dramatic flair, stumbling backward into the soft snow while laughing heartily. "Direct hit! You got me, champion!"

Maya ran over, helping Daniel up while wiping powdered snow off his jacket. "Need some assistance, corporate titan?"

"Only if the assistant promises not to throw snow down my neck," Daniel chuckled, pulling her into a warm hug.

That evening, as a roaring fire crackled inside the stone hearth, Noah sat on the plush rug, fast asleep with his head resting against Maya’s lap. Maya stroked his soft hair gently, her face glowing in the warm firelight.

Daniel sat beside her, sipping his cider, watching them both with a heart overflowing with peace.

"He loves you so much, Maya," Daniel said softly.

"I love him just as much, Daniel," Maya replied, her voice soft and sweet. "He's such a resilient, brave little boy. Every day with him is a gift."

Daniel reached into his jacket pocket, his fingers wrapping around a small, velvet-covered box he had been carrying for three weeks. He took a deep breath, his heart beating with excited anticipation.

"Maya," Daniel said quietly, shifting around to face her directly.

Maya looked up, her blue eyes reflecting the flickering flames of the fireplace. "Yes, Daniel?"

Daniel held out the small velvet box and opened it. Inside rested a breathtaking, custom-designed platinum ring set with a brilliant oval-cut diamond, surrounded by tiny sapphire accents—the color of Maya's eyes.

Maya gasped gently, her hand flying to her lips.

"Maya Miller," Daniel said, his voice rich with deep emotion. "You came into our lives when everything was broken. You protected my son, you uncovered the truth, and you restored joy to my heart. I can't imagine a single day of my future without you by my side. Will you marry me and make our family whole?"

Tears of pure happiness glistened in Maya's eyes. She looked down at sleeping Noah, then up into Daniel's loving face.

May you like

"Yes, Daniel," Maya whispered, her voice overflowing with love. "Yes, a thousand times yes!"

Daniel slid the sparkling ring onto her finger, pulling her into a passionate, loving embrace as the fire crackled warmly in the quiet alpine night.
