Chapter 5 - A Father's Fracture

The disorienting bang echoed through the library like a cannon shot. White smoke billowed into the room, blinding Daniel and sending him stumbling backward against a heavy oak table.

Arthur reacted instantly, raising his arm to guard his eyes while firing two shots toward the broken terrace doors, but the smoke obscured everything. Through the high-pitched ringing in his ears, Daniel heard the frantic clatter of high heels sprinting across broken glass, followed by the heavy engine roar of a high-horsepower SUV tearing away from the north gate.

"Daniel! Are you alright?!" Arthur coughed, waving his arm through the acrid smoke.

Daniel pushed himself up, rubbing his eyes as his vision slowly returned. The biometrics safe was empty. Lauren was gone, and so was the master archive hard drive.

"Get security on the perimeter gates!" Daniel ordered, his voice hoarse from the smoke. "Block the main road!"

"I already alerted the gatehouse," Arthur said, checking his tactical radio. "Sir... she had help. A vehicle was waiting in the shadows outside the estate wall."

Daniel looked down at the floor near the shattered French doors. Midst the glittering shards of glass lay a black leather glove, dropped in the chaos. Daniel picked it up with a gloved hand. Stamped on the inner wrist band was a subtle silver logo—a stylized crow holding a broken chain.

Daniel’s blood turned cold. "The Crow Syndicate..."

localized criminal organization that dealt in corporate espionage, high-stakes blackmail, and contract liquidations. Years ago, during his early career in commercial real estate development, Daniel had fought off an aggressive land-takeover attempt linked to shell companies backed by the Syndicate. He had thought that threat was buried a decade ago.

"Arthur," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Eleanor wasn't murdered over a personal grudge. She was killed because of the business."

"Mr. Vance," Arthur said gravely. "If the Syndicate is involved, your son is in immense danger. They know he's the only eye-witness who can connect their operative to Mrs. Eleanor's death."

Without another word, Daniel sprinted out of the library and headed straight for his vehicle.

Thirty minutes later, Daniel arrived back at St. Jude Children's Hospital. The storm outside had intensified, sheets of rain battering against the high glass windows of the pediatric wing.

He hurried down the quiet floor toward Room 412. Two armed private security guards stood outside the door. They nodded respectfully as Daniel approached.

Daniel pushed open the door softly. The room was dimly lit by a small bedside lamp. Maya was sitting in the armchair beside Noah's bed, gently reading a children's book to the boy in a soft, soothing tone. Noah was resting, his breathing peaceful.

Seeing Daniel enter, Maya closed the book and stood up quietly, stepping out into the hallway with him.

"How is he doing?" Daniel asked, his face pale and worn with exhaustion.

"He fell asleep about twenty minutes ago," Maya replied gently. "The doctor gave him something for the pain. Mr. Vance... what happened at the house? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Daniel leaned against the wall, running a hand through his damp hair. "Lauren escaped. She had help from outside. They took the 2024 security archives."

Maya’s eyes darkened with deep concern. "Then... everything Noah said was true, wasn't it?"

Daniel looked at the young woman standing in front of him. For months, Lauren had constantly complained about Maya, trying to convince Daniel to fire her for minor infractions or fabricated mistakes. Now he realized why—Lauren wanted Maya out of the mansion because Maya was too observant, too honest, and too close to Noah.

"Maya," Daniel said earnestly. "I owe you an apology. I allowed Lauren to manipulate this household. I let her put my son in danger, and I almost let her blame you for her crime."

Maya shook her head softly. "You don't need to apologize to me, Mr. Vance. You were grieving, and she exploited that. But right now, we need to focus on protecting Noah. If she took those drives, she knows we're on to her."

"I won't let anyone touch him again," Daniel said fiercely. "Tomorrow morning, I'm transferring Noah to a secure private facility under assumed names."

Suddenly, the lights inside the hallway flickered twice and died completely, plunging the hospital floor into total, pitch-black darkness.

The emergency backup generators failed to kick on.

From the end of the dark corridor, the heavy sound of footsteps began approaching.
