Chapter 8 - Secrets Beneath the Floorboards

The industrial district along the Blackwood River was a bleak expanse of rusted iron warehouses, abandoned grain silos, and rotting wooden piers. Rain poured down in heavy sheets, blurring the yellow streetlights into hazy halos of gold against the dark asphalt.
A sleek black SUV pulled up inside a cavernous, dark warehouse at Pier 14.
Lauren Vance stepped out, clutching the heavy black external hard drive against her chest like a newborn child. Her designer clothes were ruined, stained with dirt and rain, and her hair was plastered to her pale face.
From the shadows near a rusted shipping container, Victor Vance stepped forward, accompanied by three heavily armed men in dark tactical gear.
"You took your sweet time," Victor growled, flicking a half-smoked cigarette onto the wet concrete floor. "Did you bring the drive?"
"I have it," Lauren gasped, holding out the drive. "Where is my passport? Where is the offshore wire confirmation? You promised me five million dollars and safe transport to Zurich!"
Victor took the hard drive, inspecting the serial numbers on the casing before handing it to a technician sitting behind a ruggedized laptop set up on a wooden crate. "Check the contents. Make sure the July 2024 raw files are intact."
The technician plugged the drive into his system. "Decrypting now... System prompt requesting administrator key."
"Lauren," Victor commanded, turning his cold gaze back to her. "Passcode."
"Transfer the money first!" Lauren demanded, her voice cracking with desperation. "I risked everything for this! I pushed that little bastard down the stairs to keep him from talking! I risked Daniel catching me red-handed!"
Victor took a step closer, his scarred face twisting into a terrifying smile. He reached out and grabbed Lauren by the throat, lifting her slightly off her feet.
"Listen to me very carefully, you ambitious little viper," Victor whispered maliciously. "You were hired to do a simple job: keep Daniel distracted, sign the asset transfer documents, and keep your mouth shut. Instead, you nearly got us exposed because you couldn't control a six-year-old child."
Lauren choked for air, clawing at Victor's thick wrist. "I... I helped you... kill Eleanor..."
"Eleanor was smart," Victor sneered. "She fought back. You? You're just a greedy amateur who thought she could play in the big leagues."
"Boss!" the technician suddenly yelled, staring wide-eyed at his laptop screen. "We have a problem! This drive... it's transmitting an active encrypted beacon!"
Victor's eyes widened. Before he could react, the high-glass skylights of the warehouse shattered into thousands of dangerous shards.
*CRASH!*
Flashbangs rained down from the ceiling, exploding in brilliant bursts of blinding light and concussive sound.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Heavy tactical teams crashed through the side doors and descended on ropes from the roof rafters. Gunfire erupted across the vast warehouse space.
Daniel and Maya burst through the main side entrance, flanked by tactical officers. Daniel’s eyes locked instantly onto Lauren, who had fallen to her knees, screaming in terror as bullets whined off the metal shipping containers.
Victor drew his pistol, firing wildly toward the advancing federal team. "Kill them all! Destroy the laptop!"
Maya returned fire with lethal accuracy, taking down two of Victor's mercenaries with crisp, double-tap shots. She moved with fluid, predatory precision, pushing forward through the gunsmoke.
Victor grabbed the hard drive and sprinted toward the rear exit leading out to the docks.

"Daniel! Securing Lauren! Go after Victor!" Maya shouted over the roar of gunfire.
Daniel didn't hesitate. Fueled by two years of pain and rage, he sprinted after the scarred enforcer into the dark, rain-soaked night.
